However, Super’s character sheets are…well, blah.īlatant truth here. This is normally a good thing because you don’t want art styles drastically changing in an episode to the point where the flow of an episode is thrown off. This is what is referred to as “on model”. If you’re wondering, “character design” is set by one person who gives out sheets which everyone has to follow. I’ve seen a few DBS animators talk about the new art style…none of them like it haha. But that doesn’t mean an animator can’t appreciate another’s work. Naoki Tate’s work regularly comes under fire because it’s loose style and could not be more different than Shida’s. Their quality of work means everything to them, so Shida says he doesn’t enjoy his work because he’s frustrated because it’s not good enough. Shida storyboarded episode 122 that Takahashi recently animated on in DBS. So in order for DBS to go on hiatus, they themselves have to fill that slot with programming suitable for the block. If Toei loses their slot on Fuji TV, they might never get it back. Coordinating shows to fill spaces is a lot more complicated than you might think. THE SCHEDULE SUCKS!! A hiatus would fix the issue, but that in of itself also presents lots of problems, most of which have to do with companies such as Bandai Namco and Fuji TV’s television programming. Normally it takes 6-8 weeks to produce an episode…DBS episodes sometimes have as little as 3 weeks to get animated. I’m not sure WHICH fight he’s talking about…I know Tate provided key animation for Goku vs Majin Vegeta, but I can’t find any info on Shida’s sequence for Goku vs Vegeta. Hopefully he didn’t get in trouble for uploading this one from the Frieza Goku fight back in July. Genga is the Japanese term for raw animation stills….and THEY ARE AMAZING. Buuuttttt maaaaaybe he’ll be brought in for the final Luffy vs Katakuri fight.

In another question he said he’s not allowed to discuss if he’s working on the movie right now. Generally speaking, Shida will continue to do sequences for Super. The Battle of Gods sequence is 53 seconds, and he’s saying he can’t exactly remember how long it took, but about two months. In a different question, Shida said he can’t say how long it takes for him generally to work on a sequence, it just depends on how complicated the sequence is. Animation is hard work, and it takes forever. So the 4 minute sequence which was posted above took him roughly 425-450 hours. Many animators work longer hours than he does. That’s actually pretty good for an animator. So, Shida says he works about 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, or 56 hours a week.

Remember, he’s using translation software to read questions as well as answer them, so sometimes the answers might not make 100% of sense. So here’s some of his answers to questions asked by English speakers. Of course, his two most famous sequences were the ones he did for the battle of Gods Movie which was 53 seconds and for One Piece Gold which was a whopping 4 minutes long. Goku and Trunks vs Goku Black and Zamasu in DBS:
These days, Shida gets a wide berth to work on sequences (a privilege that almost nobody in the business enjoys) and his work is allowed to stand out. Unfortunately, his work can be difficult to pick out in Z because he was usually overly corrected by his superiors who didn’t appreciate his unique style. Shida’s been around since forever, animating since the early days of the original Dragon Ball anime. You’ll usually find smoke with his sequences, and if not smoke, he’ll animate light, water or whatever element is available in his “wiggly” style.
Nothing ever moves in a straight line and his shading is very distinct. Shida’s style is hugely recognizable and his animation consists of two very distinct style choices. Naotoshi Shida is AMAZING, and his work on Dragon Ball Super and One Piece is hugely popular thanks to his ability to not only animate breathtaking sequences, but he has stellar art as well. If you’re unaware of who Shida is, here’s a brief introduction. He’s said a lot of interesting things, so for those who aren’t on twitter, I thought I’d screen shot some of his answers to questions so you can all see. He cannot speak English, but has invested in some high quality translation software in order to interact with the english speaking audience. For the past few days, Naotoshi Shida has been answering questions submitted to him via app and posting his answers to twitter.
